Alopecurus pratensis ‘Aureovariegatus’
Golden Foxtail. Forms loose clumps of lemon and lime striped leaves. Good for brightening up the front of a border. Left to it’s own devices it will self-seed so also good for ground cover, but not invasive. Full sun or partial shade. Well drained soil, but will tolerate moist soil. Height 120cm with blooms, foliage 30cm. Semi-evergreen.

Ammophila arenaria
Marram Grass. Grey/ green tightly rolled leaves with dense spikes of either pale yellow or cream coloured flowers. Height 100 – 120cm. Evergreen.

Anemanthele lessoniana
Pheasants Tail Grass. Dark green leaves which turn to an orange brown in the summer and then a bright orange and red in autumn. From mid summer to early autumn it has purple-green flower spikelets. Full sun or partial shade. Height 100cm. Evergreen.

Arundo donax ‘Variegata’
A striking ornamental grass, often grown for its architectural qualities. This variety has a yellow stripe along its leaves and purplish green flowerheads appearing in late autumn. Half hardy. Full sun. Height 500cm. Semi-evergreen.

Arundo donax ‘Golden Chains’
Owing to its striped yellow and green leaves, this is a striking form of one of the giant reeds. Moist well drained soil. Full sun or partial shade, ideally protected over winter. Height 1.5 to 2m. Semi-evergreen.

Bouteloua gracilis
Mosquito Grass. Light green grass forming dense clumps of narrow leaves. Attractive flower heads which are held horizontally, brownish purple in colour. Can be densely planted and mown or strimmed for dry areas. Sunny well drained spot. Hardy. Height 60cm. Deciduous.

Briza media
Doddering Dickies, Doddering Dillies, Quaking Grass, Rattle Grass. A popular grass forming tight mounds of foliage with many “quaking” heart shaped flowerheads, which resemble hanging oats. Sun or light shade. Height 30-60cm. Semi-evergreen.

Briza media ‘Limouzi’
This blue green grass is slightly taller growing, with larger flower heads than media. Sun or light shade. Height 60cm. Semi-evergreen.

Briza media ‘Russells’
The familiar trembling spikelets on attractive green and white variegated foliage. Clump forming. Sun or light shade. Height 60cm.

Calamagrostis brachytricha
Korean Reed Grass. Clump forming low mounds of green foliage with upright purple/ red feather like flowers in summer which fade to a silvery grey. Sunny open position. Height 1.2m. Deciduous.

Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’
Feather Reed Grass. Popular for its architectural qualities, it has mounds of green foliage with mid green slender upright leaves. Purple tinted flowers, fading to a wonderful straw colour towards the end of the season. Sunny open spot. Height 1.5 - 1.8m. Deciduous.

Calamagrostis ‘Overdam’
Variegated reed grass of striking qualities. Its dense mounds of bright green and white striped leaves contrast against the pink flowerheads which appear in June to August. Sunny open spot. Height 100cm. Deciduous.

Carex buchananii
Red Fox Sedge. An ideal species for adding contrast to other grasses owing to its striking rich bronze foliage, which curl at the tips. Forms tufted erect mounds. Sunny well drained spot, but will stand damp conditions. Height 60cm. Evergreen.

Carex comans ‘Bronze Form’
Sedge. A low growing tufted grass with narrow bronze leaves which it ideal for providing winter colour. Full sun or partial shade. Height 30cm. Evergreen.

Carex comans ‘Frosted Curls’
Sedge. Thin arching leaves, silvery green in colour that curl at the tips. Clump forming. Sun or partial shade. Height 25cm. Evergreen.

Chasmanthium latifolium
Spangle Grass. Pale almost lime green leaves, with bamboo like qualities. Attractive quite flat flowers that are diamond shaped and form in clusters which will last well into winter. Will stand light shade. Moist ground. Height 100cm.

Deschampsia cespitosa
Tufted Hair Grass, Tussock Grass. Dense tussocks with dark green leaves and tall sprays of cloud like flowers turning yellow. Seed heads persist well into winter. A good grass to grow in borders as it thrives in light shade. Damp soil. Height 60cm. Evergreen.

Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Bronzeschleier’
Bronze Veil, Tufted Hair Grass. This attractive grass is great for either drift planting or in a pot. Commonly grown for its stunning bronze flowers which rise above dense clumps of narrow arching green leaves. A stunning plant either in a pot or as drift planting. Sun, part shade. Height 90cm. Deciduous.

Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’
Compact form with spikelets that start silvery green then turn golden. Seedheads last well into the winter. Shady or part shade conditions. Height 60cm. Evergreen.

Dichelachne crinata
Silvery Plume Grass. A grass that is ever increasing in popularity for its beauty and versatility. Stunning silvery-pink plumes are born in spring from bright green foliage. It is great for borders, pots or mass planting. Sunny spot in well drained soil. Height 50cm. Evergreen.

Elymus magellanicus
Magellan Blue Grass, Magellan Wheat Grass, Blue Wheat Grass. Generous clumps of intense blue foliage with long stalked, erect blue green flower spikes appearing in June. As this is possibly the most vivid of all the blue grasses it provides excellent contrast and works well as a foil for brightly coloured flowers. Full sun and well drained soil required. Height 35cm. Semi-evergreen.

Eragrostis curvula
African Love Grass, Weeping Love Grass. Elegant arching foliage with unusual drooping olive grey seed heads appearing in summer and last into autumn. Sunny open spot. Height 90cm. Deciduous.

Eragrostis curvula ‘Totnes Burgundy’
Arching stems of silvery beige flowers contrast against stunning deep red mature leaves. Sunny open spot. Height 90cm. Deciduous.

Eragrostis elliottii
Blue Love Grass. Beautiful powder blue narrow foliage formed in wide clumps with Sturdy airy flower plumes are borne in spring and look attractive well into the autumn. Drained soil in full sun. Height 20cm to 40cm with plumes rising to 90cm. Deciduous.

Eragrostis spectabilis
Purple Love Grass, Tumble Grass. Attractive dense clumps of light green leaves which turn red in autumn. Brilliant purple-red plumes which fade to softer tones in autumn. Full sun, ideally on damp well drained soil. Height 50cm. Deciduous.

Erianthus ravennae
Silk Grass, Ravenna Grass. An excellent specimen grass. Large woolly plumes (violet tinged when young) on stiff upright stems that shoot skyward borne from narrow leaves. Sunny well drained spot in light soil. Height to 1.5m, with plumes rising to up to 4.5m.

Festuca amethystina
Hair Fescue. Dense tufts of soft narrow bluish green leaves topped with dark violet flowers during early summer. Sunny open spot. Height 45cm. Evergreen.

Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’
Blue Fescue. This is an extremely popular festuca and justifiably so as it’s an attractive dwarf that looks good all year round. Low hummocks of silvery blue foliage with silver flowers held above the foliage. Sunny open spot. Height 20cm. Evergreen.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’
Albo Aurea, Golden Variegated Hakone Grass. Elegant mounds of outstanding variegated gold and green leaves, which if grown in full sun turn reddish-brown in autumn. A plant that’s beautiful on it’s own but also looks great with hostas as well as other grasses. Prefers a moist soil. Full sun/ partial shade. Height 40cm. Evergreen.

Helictotrichon sempervirens
Avena Candida, Blue Oat Grass. An architectural grass of spiky erect silvery blue foliage topped with delicate pale brown flowers in early summer. Sunny well drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. Height 90cm. Semi-evergreen.

Holcus mollis ‘Albovariegatus’
Striped Yorkshire Fog, Velvet Grass. Attractive variegated foliage of cream and white. Pale green flowers appear in July/ August. Great for ground cover. Average to dry soil in sun or part shade. Height 30cm. Evergreen.

Hordeum jubatum
Foxtail Barley, Squirrel Tail. An attractive ornamental green grass with a pinky reddish tinge. Popular for its highly decorative long bristled silky flower heads, flushed with red or purple. Reseeds itself annually. Sunny open spot. Height 60cm. Deciduous. Adam’s favourite.

Imperata ‘Red Baron’
Japanese Blood Grass. A spectacular grass which provides excellent contrast to other ornamental grasses for its stunning blood red foliage. In early summer its narrow leaves are blood red at the tips with the red pigment developing downwards through late summer and into early autumn. Fluffy silvery white flowerspikes in summer. Well drained soil in full sun. Height 40cm. Deciduous.

Juncus effusus ‘Spiralis’
Corkscrew Rush. Forms solid clumps of spiralling dark green shiny leaves with brown seed heads appearing in July/ August. Full sun or partial shade in moisture retentive soil. Ideal for shallow margins of pools. Height 45 – 60cm. Evergreen.

Juncus effusus ‘Curly Gold Strike’
Spiralling green leaves with a golden stripe along their length. Full sun to partial shade. Moist to wet soil; great in a bog pot. Height 60 to 90cm. Evergreen

Koeleria glauca
Blue Hair Grass. A mound forming ornamental grass with silvery blue-green leaves, its colour is most pronounced early in the season. Attractive dense flower spikes appear in June/ July. Full sun to partial shade on any reasonably drained soil. Height 45cm. Evergreen.

Luzula nivea
Snowy Woodrush. Slow spreading clumps of flat dark green leaves. Dense clusters of loose, arching white flowers in early to mid-summer. Very attractive en masse. Good groundcover for part shade and will tolerate full sun. Height 60cm. Evergreen.

Melica transsilvanica ‘Red Spire’
Deep red plumes appear in early summer atop this ornamental grass’s reddish-brown foliage. Partial shade, full sun on moist well-drained soil. Height 1.6 – 1.8m. Evergreen.

Milium effusum ‘Aureum’
Bowles’ Golden Grass, Golden Wood Millet. This ornamental grass can be used architecturally for its stunning bright yellow leaves. Pretty yellow flowers from May to July. Dappled sunlight on fertile, well drained soil. Height 40cm. Evergreen.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’
A dwarf grass cultivar, ideal for small gardens. A clump forming ornamental grass with arching narrow foliage of silver-grey blades which turn yellow in the autumn. In late summer erect pink tassel like flower spikes appear which gradually turn cream as the seeds mature. Sunny open spot. Height 1.5m approximately. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Augustfeder’
Wide green leaves form dense clumps. Silvery white flower plumes appear in August/ September. Full sun or partial shade, most soil types. Height 2m in bloom. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Autumn Light’
Japanese Silver Grass, Maiden Grass. A cold hardy Miscanthus with a full arching form. Although large in size it’s narrow green foliage gives it a delicate appearance. Flowerheads appear in mid September and it’s foliage takes on an attractive yellowish tinge in the autumn. Sunny spot. Height 2.4m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Cosmopolitan’
A great ornamental grass for use architecturally, its foliage has deep green centres with creamy white margins. Copper red flowers emerging in late summer. Sunny open spot. Height approximately 2m. Semi-evergreen.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Emerald Giant’
So called for its emerald green foliage which grows in great architectural spikes. Broad green leaves with narrow midribs. Flowers August to October. Full sun. Height to 2m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’
Far East. Tall erect green foliage with a silvery white midrib which turns copper red in autumn. Spectacular wine red plumes which darken to brown then fade to beige in the autumn. A truly handsome grass. Full sun on well drained soil. Height 1.5 – 1.8m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’
Elegant narrow green leaves with a white stripe along the midrib. Copper red flower spikes may appear in late summer. Winter interest from the foliage changing to a bleached beige. Full sun. Height 2m approx. Semi-evergreen.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Hermann Mussel’
Arching broad foliage with a white midrib. The red brown plumes of summer will age to a beautiful silver and are held high above the foliage. Moist soil in full sun. Height 2m.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Fontane’
Small Fountain. Erect mounds of narrow green leaves with a silver midrib. Blooms appear in summer, initially reddish then turning to soft pink before finally fading to beige. Sunny open position. Height 1.5m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Silberspinne’
Another miscanthus that adds colour and interest for many months. It’s narrow arching green foliage has a silver midrib. In summer red-brown flower plumes which age to a silvery-pink appear which last until the following spring. Sunny open spot. Height approximately 1.5 – 1.8m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Krater’
Dwarf variety, grown for its red autumn foliage and late flowers. Deep crimson, silky flowerheads appear in summer and fade to buff in winter. Full sun or partial shade. Height 1.2m. Semi-evergreen.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Little Kitten’
Dwarf variety of compact habit. Reddish brown flowers in late September through to November. Suits borders, pots or alpine beds. Height 75cm. Semi-evergreen.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’
Japanese Silver Grass. The refined stems of this ornamental grass seem to capture the light. Its elegant arching green foliage is edged with white and provides an illumination which doesn’t fade in the shade. Crimson red flower plumes which gradually fade to a pinky beige appear in autumn. Sunny open spot. Height approximately 1.6m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Punktchen’
Little Dot. Upright clumps of narrow bright green foliage with golden yellow bands or ‘dots’ along the stems. Red flower tassels from late summer form an attractive contrast to the leaves. Medium wet, well drained soil. Ideally full sun. Height 1.5m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Purpurascens’
A great choice for summer and autumn colour. This compact genus has bright green foliage that turns a show stopping red in the late summer and then a burnt orange in the autumn. It’s purply pink feathery blooms appear in summer and last well into the winter. Full sun to part shade. Height to 1.5m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Rotsilber’
This compact grower can be used as a specimen plant or to add colour to a border. An upright habit of bright green leaves with a silvery pink midrib. Impressive deep shiny red flower plumes close to the foliage from summer onwards, that turn white and fluffy in the late autumn. Great for fiery autumn colour. Sunny open spot or light shade. Height 1.4 – 1.8m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Sioux’
Another late flowering dwarf variety with silky silvery pink plumes, which although fading, will remain into winter. Beautiful foliage which takes on orange and brown hues in the autumn. Sunny open spot or some light shade. Height 90cm. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Strictus’
Porcupine Grass. Spiky green foliage, banded horizontally with a cream-yellow mean this grass is often mistaken for Zebra Grass. Pink flowers in late summer/ autumn. Tolerates most soil types but enjoys a sunny open spot. Height 1.8m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegata’
Variegated Maiden Grass. A dramatic clump forming ornamental grass with green and white leaves in equal measure. Sun, part shade. Height 1.5-1.7m. Deciduous. Megan’s favourite.

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Yaku Jima’
An ornamental grass from the island of Yaku-jima, off Japan. Free flowering reddish flower plumes which age to a silvery white. Height 1 to 1.2m. Deciduous.

Miscanthus sinensis nepalensis
This ornamental grass from Nepal is a wonderful addition to the garden. Graceful golden flower plumes are an attractive feature from August to November. It forms a compact mound making it ideal for small gardens. Full sun or partial shade, sheltered spot for the winter. Height 1.2m.

Molinia arundinacea ‘Skyracer’
Purple Moor Grass, Tall Moor Grass. A strikingly tall upright grass of grey greens which turns pale gold in autumn. Taller than ‘Karl Foerster’. Dainty feathery beige flower sprays in summer. Sunny open spot. Height 2.4m. Deciduous.

Molinia caerulea ‘Edith Dudszus’
Densely tufted grass of green foliage with intense purple almost black narrow flower panicles. Flowers July to October. Good colour through the winter. Sunny open spot. Height 1m. Deciduous.

Molinia caerulea ‘Moorhexe’
Bog Witch, Moor Witch. Upright green foliage forms in a tight clump from which narrow needle like purplish green flower spikes appear. Attractive year round foliage combined with it’s structural form make this an excellent accent plant. Sunny open spot. Height 1m. Deciduous.

Molinia caerulea ‘Heidebraut’
Heather Bride. Erect pale green leaves. Purplish flower plumes which fade to pale yellow. Height 1.2m.

Molinia caerulea ‘Karl Foerster’
Purple Moor Grass. Dark purple flower plumes on very bright upright leaves. Full sun or light shade, preferably slightly acid soil. Height 1.8m. Deciduous.

Molinia caerulea ‘Transparent’
Purple Moor Grass. A clump forming ornamental grass with arching foliage and dainty purplish plumes appearing in summer. Interest is provided late into the year as the flowers take on warm golden tones in autumn. Full sun, partial shade on well drained moist soil. Height 1.5 to 2m. Deciduous.

Nassella tenuissima
Mexican Feather Grass, Pony Tails. (Previous classification Stipa tenuissima.) A very popular compact perennial grass with fine hair like foliage of bright green. Masses of elegant light green flowers held high above the foliage appear in summer. Ideal for open woodlands and dry spaces, or placed with rock plants. Sunny well drained position. Height 60cm. Evergreen. John’s favourite.

Ophiopogon planiscarpus ‘Nigrescens’
Black Dragon Grass, Black Grass. Broad tufts of black leaves provide year round colour. Violet-purple flowers in summer, with occasional shiny blue black berries in autumn. Good for ground cover. Sun, part-shade. Height 15cm. Evergreen.

Ophiopogon planiscarpus ‘Green Dragon’
Similar to ‘Black Dragon’ excepting foliage is dark green. Both varieties look beautiful in the rain, when the leaves enhance their shine. Purply-green flower stems. Sun or part shade. Height 15cm. Evergreen.

Panicum clandestinum
Deer Tongue Grass. A bamboo like grass with pale green leaves which provide autumn colour as they turn yellow and brown. In July and August loose silvery flower panicles. Height 1.2 to 1.5m. Deciduous.

Panicum strictum ‘Compactum’
A more unusual switch grass for its purple tipped leaves that turn yellow and red in autumn. Reddish flower plumes. Full sun. Height 1.2m.

Panicum virgatum
Switch Grass. Panicums continue to rise in popularity. Striking airy panicles of pale pink top clumps of vertical, narrow green foliage. Autumn interest as the leaves turn a golden colour which fades but remains well into the winter. Drought tolerant once established. Withstand light shade, but flower best in full sun. Leaves grow to around 60cm, with flower stems extending to approximately 1.8m. Deciduous.

Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’
Blue Switch Grass. Clumps of erect metallic blue foliage with large panicles of burgundy tinted seed heads in late summer/ autumn. Sunny open spot. Height 1.2m. Deciduous.

Panicum virgatum ‘Prairie Sky’
This attractive Switch Grass is larger and bluer than ‘Heavy Metal’. Graceful airy reddish flowerheads sit above wonderful blue stems of foliage. Excellent feature plant. Full sun. Height 1.2m. Deciduous.

Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’
This stunning switch grass is sometimes mistaken for Imperata cylindrical ‘Red Baron’ due to its intense dark red foliage that uniformly turns burgundy in late summer. Airy panicles of deep pinky red open in August to September. Sunny spot. Height 1 – 1.2m. Deciduous.

Panicum virgatum ‘Squaw’
Vigorous fountain-like green foliage which turns red in late summer. Sprays of pinkish purple flowers high above the foliage which last all summer. Sunny open spot. Height 1.2m. Deciduous.

Panicum virgatum ‘Warrior’
Another great form of switch grass which looks attractive till the following spring. Green foliage with characteristic red tones. Large purplish flower head which remain all summer. Well drained soil in sun. Height 1.2 to 1.5m. Deciduous.

Pennisetum alopecuroides
Fountain Grass. Tufts of bright green foliage from which spring arching stems with plumes of purple-green bristles which have been said to resemble hanging caterpillars. Often used in prairie planting schemes but equally suited to pots. Full sun, partial shade. Height 70 to 90cm.

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’
Fountain Grass. Delightful ornamental grass that forms low, compact mounds of dark green foliage which yellows in the autumn. It comes into its own in late summer when its bristly purple flower spikes appear. Full sun on well drained soil. Height 70 to 90cm. Deciduous.

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Little Bunny’
Charming neat mounds of compact green foliage from which masses of fluffy white “bunny tails” burst forth in the summer. Favours a sunny well drained spot. Height 25cm. Deciduous.

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Weserbergland’
Mounds of narrow green foliage which takes on golden hues in late autumn. Reliably flowering creamy foxtails in late summer. Sunny well drained position. Height 60cm. Deciduous.

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Viridescens’
Fountain Grass. Broad green foliage from which many feathery, almost black, flower heads are produced in early autumn. Autumn colour as the foliage takes on orange and red hues. Full sun on moist well drained soil. Height 60cm. Deciduous. Maureen’s favourite.

Pennisetum macrourum
African Feather Grass. Silvery green mounds of clump forming foliage with long, thin white flowerheads on arching stems. Flowering period: summer. Sunny, sheltered spot. Height 1.2m. Deciduous.

Pennisetum glaucum ‘Purple Majesty’
This impressive ornamental grass is grown as an annual. Although foliage starts green, as the plant matures it transforms itself as it takes on varying shades of purple in its entirety, from the stems, to the broad leaves to the silky flowerheads. Easy to grow. Sunny open spot. Height 1m. Annual.

Pennisetum massaicum ‘Red Buttons’
Mounds of green foliage with burgundy highlights, combine with abundant attractive red flowerplumes which age to an off white. Long flowering season. Sunny spot, in well drained soil. Height 1m. Deciduous.

Pennisetum orientale
Tall Tails. Pennisetums are some of the best ornamental grasses and this one is no exception. The species characteristic long flowerheads are white tinged with pink for this variety and last throughout the autumn and into winter. Well drained soil in full sun. Height 60cm. Deciduous.

Pennisetum orientale ‘Karley Rose’
Early flowering fountain grass with masses of beautiful dusky pink flowerheads. More upright foliage than Pennisetum orientale. Good for ground cover. Full sun. Height 75cm. Deciduous. David’s favourite.

Pennisetum ruppelianum
A magnificent ornamental grass. Long, feathery flowerheads which are often a purply mauve in colour. Full sun. Height will vary, 70cm plus. Deciduous.

Pennisetum villosum
Ethiopian Fountain Grass, Feather Grass. Fountain like habit of clumps of linear grey-green foliage with masses of green flowerheads which fade to an attractive beige white. Full sun on well drained soil. Height 60cm. Deciduous.

Phragmites australis ‘Variegatus’
A more attractive form of the common reed. Burgundy flower plumes top the variegated yellow and green foliage. Suits most damp conditions. Full sun or partial shade. Height 1.8 to 2m. Deciduous.

Sesleria heufleriana
Green Moor Grass. Evergreen leaves with a silvery underside form a compact mound. Long, white flowerspikes appear in spring. Sun or light shade. Height 30cm.

Spartina pectinata ‘Aureomarginata’
Cord Grass. Narrow dark green foliage with golden yellow margins. Naturally suits ponds and marshes. In August to September purple tinted flowers. Height 1.2m. Evergreen.

Stipa gigantea
Striking ornamental grass that makes a good feature plant. Oat-like flower heads issue forth on long stems from spiky clumps of narrow green foliage. Seed heads last well into winter. Sunny well drained spot. Height 2 – 2.5m. Evergreen.

Stipa tenuifolia
A versatile grass that can be used for beds or borders as well as architecturally. Wispy yellow green foliage combines with feather silver-green flower plumes. Full sun, will grow on most soil types. Height 60cm. Deciduous.

Lesser Bulrush, Lesser Reedmace. Narrow leaves which bear the familiar round poker flowerheads of the bulrush in summer. Ideal for shallow waters. Sunny open spot. Height 1.8m. Deciduous.

Typha minima
Dwarf Bullrush, Small Reedmace. Erect habit. Ideal for shallow water or containerised water features. Flowering period August to December. Full sun. Height 60cm.

Uncinia rubra
Red Hook Sedge. Brilliant red broad leafed foliage which lasts all year round. Dark-brown flower spikes in summer. Sun or part shade, likes damp conditions. Height 30cm. Evergreen.
