Achnatherum
calamagrostis (stipa calamagrostis)
A lovely grass that produces seed heads from early summer
to late autumn. It is easily combined with other plants
in a mixed border. The long feathery flower heads arch
and billow - ideal for the front of the border, softening
path edges and mass planting on sunny slopes. Height
90cm.
Alopecurus
pratensis ‘Aureovariegatus’
Golden Foxtail. Forms loose clumps of lemon
and lime striped leaves. Good for brightening up the
front of a border. Left to it’s own devices it
will self-seed so also good for ground cover, but not
invasive. Full sun or partial shade. Well drained soil,
but will tolerate moist soil. Height 120cm with blooms,
foliage 30cm. Semi-evergreen.
Ammophila
arenaria
Marram Grass. Grey/ green tightly rolled leaves
with dense spikes of either pale yellow or cream coloured
flowers. Height 100 – 120cm. Evergreen.
Andropogon gerardii
A very useful plant for a hot dry site with poor soil,
it has stunning autumn colour turning reddish brown
which colours smoulder in the low early winter sun.
It produces long silver seed heads in late summer. Height
1.5m.
Andropogon scoparius 'Prairie Blues'
Similar to gerardii but with blue stems turning to orange
red in the autumn. Height 1m.

lessoniana
Pheasants Tail Grass. Dark green leaves which
turn to an orange brown in the summer and then a bright
orange and red in autumn. From mid summer to early autumn
it has purple-green flower spikelets. Full sun or partial
shade. Height 100cm. Evergreen.

donax ‘Variegata’
A striking ornamental grass, often grown for its architectural
qualities. This variety has a yellow stripe along its
leaves and purplish green flowerheads appearing in late
autumn. Half hardy. Full sun. Height 3m. Semi-evergreen.

Owing to its striped yellow and green leaves, this is
a striking form of one of the giant reeds. Moist well
drained soil. Full sun or partial shade, ideally protected

Mosquito Grass. Light green grass forming dense
clumps of narrow leaves. Attractive flower heads which
are held horizontally, brownish purple in colour. Can

Doddering Dickies, Doddering Dillies, Quaking Grass,
Rattle Grass. A popular grass forming tight mounds
of foliage with many “quaking” heart shaped

Feather Reed Grass. Popular for its architectural

Red Fox Sedge. An ideal species for adding
contrast to other grasses owing to its striking rich
bronze foliage, which curl at the tips. Forms tufted
erect mounds. Sunny well drained spot, but will stand

Sedge. A low growing tufted grass with narrow bronze
leaves which it ideal for providing winter colour. Full

Sedge. Thin aching leaves, silvery green in colour that
curl at the tips. Clump forming. Sun or partial shade.

Similar to buchananii but has a more arching habit,

A graceful sedge that produces impressive star shaped
seed heads in early summer, ideal for pond edge planting.

Produces large nodding seed heads in early summer. A

Palm Leaf sedge. Unlike most sedges this erect growing
plant produces palm like leaves. Very good ground cover

Carex rosea
Very graceful with narrow foliage that produces delicate
rosey red flowering stigmers in late spring. Drought
tolerant, good for ground cover. Height 25cm.
Carex testacea 'Prairie Fire'
A fine textured arching grass. Copper brown with distinct
orange tints in the winter. Very good in containers
for year round interest. Height 40cm.

Spangle Grass. Pale almost lime green leaves, with bamboo
like qualities. Attractive quite flat flowers that are
diamond shaped and form in clusters which will last

A tall attractive grass for a dry sunny place that has
beautiful open seed heads in mid-summer adds delicate

Tufted Hair Grass, Tussock Grass. Dense tussocks
with dark green leaves and tall sprays of cloud like
flowers turning yellow. Seed heads persist well into
winter. A good grass to grow in borders as it thrives
in light shade. Damp soil. Height 60cm. Evergreen.
Deschampsia
cespitosa ‘Bronzeschleier’
Bronze Veil, Tufted Hair Grass. This attractive
grass is great for either drift planting or in a pot.
Commonly grown for its stunning bronze flowers which
rise above dense clumps of narrow arching green leaves.
A stunning plant either in a pot or as drift planting.

Compact form with spikelets that start silvery green
then turn golden. Seedheads last well into the winter.

Has very bright yellow green leaves that bring some
"zing" to the garden in spring. Ideal for

Silvery Plume Grass. A grass that is ever increasing
in popularity for its beauty and versatility. Stunning
silvery-pink plumes are born in spring from bright green
foliage. It is great for borders, pots or mass planting.

Magellan Blue Grass, Magellan Wheat Grass, Blue
Wheat Grass. Generous clumps of intense blue foliage
with long stalked, erect blue green flower spikes appearing
in June. As this is possibly the most vivid of all the
blue grasses it provides excellent contrast and works
well as a foil for brightly coloured flowers. Full sun

A lovely grass that has delicate reddish pink seed heads

Silk Grass, Ravenna Grass. An excellent specimen
grass. Large woolly plumes (violet tinged when young)
on stiff upright stems that shoot skyward borne from
narrow leaves. Sunny well drained spot in light soil.

Hair Fescue. Dense tufts of soft narrow bluish
green leaves topped with dark violet flowers during

Unlike other festucas this has wide slightly twisted
green leaves and grows up to 1m. Shade loving it produces
tall arching seed heads that turn yellow in late summer.

A very good form of blue fescue it keeps its colour
better through the winter than other varieties. Height
25cm. Evergreen.

‘Elijah Blue’
Blue Fescue. This is an extremely popular festuca
and justifiably so as it’s an attractive dwarf
that looks good all year round. Low hummocks of silvery
blue foliage with silver flowers held above the foliage.

Albo Aurea, Golden Variegated Hakone Grass.
Elegant mounds of outstanding variegated gold and green
leaves, which if grown in full sun turn reddish-brown

grasses. Prefers a moist soil. Full sun/ partial shade.

cylindrica ‘Red Baron’
Japanese Blood Grass. A spectacular grass which
provides excellent contrast to other ornamental grasses
for its stunning blood red foliage. In early summer
its narrow leaves are blood red at the tips with the
red pigment developing downwards through late summer
and into early autumn. Well drained soil in full sun.

Corkscrew Rush. Forms solid clumps of spiralling
dark green shiny leaves with brown seed heads appearing

Spiralling green leaves with a golden stripe along their

Deep red plumes appear in early summer atop this ornamental
grass’s reddish-brown foliage. Partial shade,

Bowles’ Golden Grass, Golden Wood Millet.
This ornamental grass can be used architecturally for
its stunning bright yellow leaves. Pretty yellow flowers

sinensis ‘Adagio’
A dwarf grass cultivar, ideal for small gardens. A clump
forming ornamental grass with arching narrow foliage
of silver-grey blades which turn yellow in the autumn.

this ornamental grass seem to capture the light. Its

A great choice for summer and autumn colour. This compact
genus has bright green foliage that turns a show stopping
red in the late summer and then a burnt orange in the

This compact grower can be used as a specimen plant
or to add colour to a border. An upright habit of bright

A stunning fine textured clump forming grass blue-green
in colour with upright flower heads that are purple/grey
in colour lasting through most winters. It does need
warm summers to flower but well worth a place in the
garden semi evergreen 1.5m.

Mexican Feather Grass, Pony Tails. (Previous
classification Stipa tenuissima.) A very popular compact
perennial grass with fine hair like foliage of bright
green. Masses of elegant light green flowers held high
above the foliage appear in summer. Ideal for open woodlands
and dry spaces, or placed with rock plants. Sunny well
drained position. Height 60cm. Evergreen.

Black Dragon Grass, Black Grass. Broad tufts
of black leaves provide year round colour. Violet-purple
flowers in summer, with occasional shiny blue black

Similar to ‘Black Dragon’ excepting foliage

pale green leaves which provide autumn colour as they

narrow green foliage. Autumn interest as the leaves

to around 60cm, with flower stems extending to approximately

Blue Switch Grass. Clumps of erect metallic
blue foliage with large panicles of burgundy tinted

This attractive Switch Grass is larger and bluer than
‘Heavy Metal’. Graceful airy reddish flowerheads

This stunning switch grass is sometimes mistaken for
Imperata cylindrical ‘Red Baron’ due to

Vigorous fountain-like green foliage which turns red
in late summer. Sprays of pinkish purple flowers high

till the following spring. Green foliage with characteristic

Fountain Grass. Tufts of bright green foliage
from which spring arching stems with plumes of purple-green
bristles which have been said to resemble hanging caterpillars.
Often used in prairie planting schemes but equally suited

Fountain Grass. Delightful ornamental grass
that forms low, compact mounds of dark green foliage
