The best choices for Ornamental grasses in Autumn and Winter

hannah read

As the warm summer days fade into distant memory, we’re looking towards the autumn, where Ornamental grasses come into their own to play an important part in the winter garden.

While other plants in the garden may have stopped flowering and will lose their summer lustre over the winter months, this is where Ornamental grasses perform beautifully. Shades of bronze, tan and russet coupled with height and movement can be used to create an impressive vista during the colder seasons.

Many varieties are hardy and easy to maintain in autumn and winter. Their tough nature means that they continue to provide colour and fluidity until they require cutting back next Spring.

September, October and into November are the best time to plant your grasses as the soil is at its warmest. It’s time to stop when there is a chance of frost.

Placed alongside vibrant evergreen shrubs, grasses offer a great contrast with winter berries and give stunning frosted patterns to the garden. They look particularly special covered with a light dusting of snow.

Our favourite varieties include Miscanthus sinensis ‘Silberfeder’ which not only look spectacular in late summer with their large silver pink plumes, but also display frost on their graceful foliage beautifully. We’d also recommend Miscanthus sinensis ‘Little Kitten’ and Molina caerulea subsp arundinacea ‘Transparent’. All of which are available to buy now on our website.
